Many of you will be wondering what exactly kratom is, why it gaining so much popularity and what are its effects. Kratom is a plant that is native to Southeast Asia and is usually referred by its latin name “Mitragyna Speciosa”. Interestingly, kratom falls within the Rubiaceae family, which is the coffee plant and via botanical studies, it has been discovered that there are many commonalities between coffee plants and kratom.

What exactly is Kratom?

Primarily, kratom is famous for providing various medicinal benefits to its users, which range from boosting the immune system, providing pain relief, reducing anxiety, stress, depression, aiding those recovering from opium addiction etc. It has a variety of strains, such as red, green and white, and there are powerful differences amongst these various strains. Different strains and varieties are commonly used to aid insomnia, chronic pain and boost a person’s overall energy and mental processing levels and abilities. This is owed due to the differing ranges of alkaloids levels existing within the different strains of kratom.

Why is it used?

The plant is used extensively across Southeast Asia due to the host of various properties it has that allow it to be much more medically beneficial than other plants, both chemically and physically. This unusual nature of the plant has made it attractive to a variety of people, ranging from everyday users to chemists and botanists who wish to study this plant more extensively, in order to derive more medicinal benefits and usages. Many wish to develop ways to extend the life of this plant further, in order to increase its usage and growth.

Physical Properties of Kratom

In contrast to different plants that tend to have a significantly higher alkaloid level, kratom plants have the ability to grow into heights of up to 30 feet and width of 15 feet. Kratom trees are practical because they adapt easily to various climates, however, they will be evergreen only in tropical and sometimes semi-tropical climates. The leaves of the kratom tree are where most of the medicinal benefits and properties lie, and these can grow into lengths of seven inches and widths of four to five inches.

Chemical Properties of Kratom

Aside from kratom’s physical properties that make it beneficial for use, its leaves have more than forty different alkaloids within them. Each of these alkaloids is unique and these are:

Mitragynine, 7-hydroxymitragynine, Corynantheidine, Epicatechin, Isomitraphylline, Isopteropodine, Isorhynchophylline, Pantetheine.

These alkaloids act as analgesics that stimulate the immune system, provide relaxation and calm the muscles down. Each of them is unique and has the ability to provide a plethora of benefits to its users. Not only do these unique alkaloids provide a range of benefits for the user of kratom, but they also make the plant extremely worthwhile for alkaloid researchers, chemical scientists as well as for pharmacologists, etc.

Is Kratom Right For You?

After reading a comprehensive guide to kratom, the question in any consumer’s mind will be whether they need kratom or not. This depends entirely on the user’s purpose and reasons for needing this plant. If the user is suffering from painful withdrawal symptoms of opiate addiction, suffers from chronic pain, needs stimulation and help with distraction etc. then kratom is the perfect and healthiest option available.
