K-Guides: Kindly tell us about yourself, your occupation?

Martin Bravek: I am a founder of Leafoflifekratom.com, a tattoo shop owner, and living in Miami, Florida.

K-Guides: Please describe which health conditions that led you to try Kratom?

Martin Bravek: It is related to arthritis by sitting for 21 years like a contortionist while doing many hours tattooing (sometimes 12 hours a day) as well a back injury from farm work. This all resulted in severe depression and almost led to suicide. The inability to do what I love and cherish (work and Horseback riding, farm work).

K-Guides: Please describe the type of Kratom strain that has worked well for you and how much you take (in grams) regularly?

Martin Bravek: I usually take green and white kratom. Since they are “headier” than reds, I like the mood lift from the greens as well the energy and focus from white strains. I hardly ever use red’s, even though they are more pain relieving but don’t have the mental uplift like greens and whites. I usually dose four times a day, between 6-8 grams depending on the potency of the particular strain.

K-Guides: How you take your Kratom and if you use one variety or multiple?

Martin Bravek: I usually take it through toss & wash. Used to make my own capsules since the taste is hard to get used to.

Found it to be to work intensively on a daily basis and switched to making shakes and smoothies – but still tasted horrible. I find that the toss and wash are the fastest, most effective, and if done correctly, you don’t taste it since it is quick.

I try to rotate as much as possible to avoid tolerance buildup – different greens and whites. I tend to like green and white Maeng Da’s as well as Hulu’s and Jong kongs – found some excellent green Borneo to work great as well.

K-Guides: You said that you dose 6-8 grams and four times in a day. How did you find your “sweet spot” dosage? What will you suggest to beginners?

Martin Bravek: I was lucky and found the right amount pretty much right away. However, when suggesting it to a client, I try to advise that less is indeed more.

I suggest starting with a teaspoon wait about 30-40 minutes and pay attention to the pain level as well as the mental state.

If nothing changes, I tell them to wait about 2 hours and repeat with a teaspoon and a half and so forth till the right amount is found.

I find that most people will take between 5 and 10 grams to get the right amount for them. I also found that the weight and height of a consumer don’t play a role in how much they need to find the sweet spot.

K-Guides: Which potentiators do you think goes really well with the kratom?

I also would advise taking some potentiators such as acidic beverages with the kratom as well an excellent fat source (coconut oil, etc.) it will make it work better. I also would advise you to drink a lot of water and take magnesium, to avoid constipation

K-Guides: In the media we have heard many side effects of Kratom? Have you experienced any with kratom?

Martin Bravek: No bad experiences, no side effects. No addiction or bad habits. The only side effects are the ones that come back what take it for the begin with. Such as any remedy or supplement.

Kratom might dry you out and can, therefore, lead to having problems with their bowels (minor though). There’s a lot more that could be said about how to take it and what to do to make it work better (red bubble method, extracts, etc.). But you could literally fill a book with it

K-Guides: What is your concern about FDA warnings/statements against Kratom use and detention of kratom-containing dietary supplements?

Martin Bravek: FDA has lost the war on Kratom and shot themselves in the foot when tried to schedule, all it did raise awareness to people that want to get out of the opiate habit and look for alternatives.

K-Guides: As being a Kratom vendor and lover, are you involved in any activity to keep kratom legal and safe?

Martin Bravek: Yes, signing petitions, emails to representatives as well as lawmakers to put forth federal regulation for the safety of the consumer. Thankfully no harmful activity in my part of the USA.

Hi, my name is Jody Palmer and as far back as I can remember I have always depended on Alcohol and or drugs.

I believe it started when I was about 9 years old when I had a severe head injury, which caused a severe brain injury.

I had no idea back then the effects that baseball bat against my skull would have on me the rest of my life.

Severe depression, many suicide attempts and mental hospital stay.

The last thing I was taking before I found this wonderful herb Kratom was suboxone and tramadol.

I was using the subs to get off the tramadol and if you think tramadol isn’t that bad try getting off them cold turkey after years of taking them.

I have also been on all kinds of different pain killers and antidepressants.

Nothing seemed to help me with that terrible feeling of hopelessness.

The first time I tried Kratom, it didn’t work for me because I was still taking an opiate.

It wasn’t until I saw a YouTube video of a guy in South Carolina talking about how to take it.

To make sure the freshness and that for Kratom to work correctly we have to be off opiates for at least 12-24 hours and suboxone and methadone we have to be off for at least 48 hours.

I ordered some from this guy and got the vials off liquid Maeng da, and I quit the suboxone and waited 3 days, and it worked this time.

I couldn’t believe it.

I have been off opiates for about 3 years now, and yes, I do use Kratom daily because it also helps with depression and anxiety – I believe due to the head injury.

Kratom is an excellent natural herb and really helps me. I probably take it 5-6 times a day.

When I started, I didn’t need a lot maybe 1/2 a tablespoon, but now I’m up to about 1/4 cup each time. I do find that if I eat mangoes, it helps with the tolerance issues. Grapefruit, orange juice also help when my tolerance gets too high.

My favourite strain is green Maeng da mixed with white Maeng da and maybe some enhanced mixed in too.

I tried the reds, and they put me to sleep, so I don’t really like them. I mix it up a lot and try different strains because for me, each one has a slightly different euphoric feeling.

I believe all the strains that I have tried helps with pain.

I also have had an artificial disc replacement surgery, so I know what it’s like to be in pain.

I give Kratom and hard work the credit for my sobriety and the lawn care business I run now. I definitely wouldn’t be able to do it without Kratom.

I noticed that if I take too much, I get nauseous and feel dizzy so that makes it impossible for me at least to overdose on it, which when I took pain killers I always took way to many and they would run out at the end of the month. It was a vicious cycle month after month.

I think that if Kratom is banned there will be a lot of people dying because it helps people tremendously. I believe we should be able to consume any kind of herd legally and I think the FDA needs to know that it will cause more harm than good making it illegal.

I have signed the petition to keep it legal. I am on a few Facebook groups. I have been thinking about starting a business or at least look into becoming a Kratom supplier.

I am not sure of anything in Greeley Co. I would love to get more involved if I knew of anything.

I believe everything is addictive but at least Kratom is natural and not synthetic. But the thing about Kratom is it tells us when we took too much, and we know not to take that much next time.

History Kratom in the USA

In August 2016, the DEA proposed the listing of kratom as a schedule 1 drug, the same category as heroin, LSD, ecstasy, and cocaine, due to its opiate-like effects in the body. This would mean that it was completely banned. However, the proposition was removed in October, the same year.

A total of 1,809 arrests were made in 1,784 drug cases during the period.”

This leads to the finding that concomitantly administering CYP modulating drugs such as carbamazepine, theophylline, digoxin, and warfarin will lead to a clinically significant drug interaction.

Alkaloid mitragynine is also found to directly inhibit the neurons in the lateral hypothalamus which explains its effect of anorexia and weight loss. The anti-depressive effects Kratom is known for are also reported to come mainly from mitragynine. It also possesses anti-malarial properties.

A 2018 study on humans stated that mitragynine does not weaken memory, motor function, and attention nor does it impair the executive function of regular Kratom users.

2) Paynantheine (PAY) – Stimulant, Smooth Muscle Relaxant, Potassium Channel Blocker

Paynantheine is an indole alkaloid which forms approximately 9% of Kratom alkaloids. It has opioid-like and stimulant effects. After Kratom intake paynantheine is reported to be found in urine.

PAY has been shown to restrain twitch contraction as well as inhibit the muscarine receptors on ileal smooth muscles thus, acting as a smooth muscle relaxer. It is suggested to have cardiotoxic properties due to its blocking effect on potassium current in stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes. Furthermore, a study has also reported paynantheine to be a weak antagonist of the mu-opioid receptor.

3) Speciogynine – Smooth Muscle Relaxant, Weak Mu-opioid Antagonist

Speciogynine is found to be 6.6% to 7% of the total alkaloid contents of Kratom. Speciogynine (SG), a diastereomer of Mitragynine is reported to be the third most abundant alkaloid in Kratom, first and second, being mitragynine and paynanthenine respectively. It is said to be structurally similar to opioids.

It also acts as a Smooth muscle relaxer by inhibiting twitch contraction in a naloxone-insensitive manner and inhibiting muscarine receptors in ileal smooth muscle. Additionally, it is suggested to have weak mu-opioid antagonist effect.

4) 7-Hydroxymitragynine (7-HMG): Anti-tussive, Stimulant, Potent Analgesic, Anti-diarrheal

7-HMG possesses the psychoactive properties found in Kratom. It marks approximately 2% of the total alkaloid content. It reinforces the effects of mitragynine partly by mu- and partly by delta-opioid receptors. It has been reported to have a five-fold greater affinity for mu-opioid receptors than mitragynine.

7-HMG is said to have a higher lipid affinity as compared to morphine making it easier to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. Thus, it has more potent analgesic activity. 7-HMG is also a potent anti-tussive. Although it exhibits an anti-diarrheal effect, it has been found to be less constipating than morphine.

5) Speciociliatine: Weak Opioid Agonist

Speciociliatine forms 0.8 – 1 % of alkaloid content in Kratom. It is the C3 stereoisomer of mitragynine.

Research shows that this alkaloid and its metabolites remain unidentified in human urine so far and there is a potential for them to be used as further markers of Kratom use. It inhibits twitch contraction. It is also found to hamper acetylcholine release from presynaptic nerve through ways other than stimulation of opioid receptors.

6) Mitragynine Oxindole B – More Potent Than Morphine, Less Addictive

It forms less than 1% of total alkaloid content found in Kratom. It is three folds more potent than morphine. It has also been found to cause less tolerance, respiratory depression and inhibition of gastrointestinal motility than equivalent doses of morphine. It also appears to lack addictiveness.

7) Ajmalicine – Cerebro-Circulant, Anti-aggregant, Anti-adrenergic (At Alpha-1), Sedative, Anti-convulsant, Smooth Muscle Relaxant

Ajamalicine is also known as Raubasine or δ-yohimbine. It is structurally similar to alkaloids from yohimbine. It acts as an antagonist of α1-adrenergic and α2-adrenergic receptors with a preferential α2 antagonism. This explains its antihypertensive effect.
